The Gorges de l'Ardèche
Easy to visit by car, the Gorges de l'Ardèche is a real canyon of about thirty km dug in the limestone platform between the Pont d’Arc (Vallon Pont d’Arc) and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. You can start the panoramic road on the north side and drive through the garrigue.
The Gorges form the frontier between the departments of the Ardèche and the Gard. Many belvederes with names reminding the different sites have been created all along this itinerary, going from the Serre de Tourre with a wonderful viewpoint on the Cevennes and towards Alès at the entrance of the Gorges, to the Ranc Pointu offering a panoramic view on Aiguèze, Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche and further on the Rhone valley and the Mont Ventoux.
The majestic Pont d’Arc
The Pont d’Arc has been a classified site since 1982. This stone arch is the result of the work the water has accomplished for ages; first by creating a narrow meander in the limestone and next by digging into the most direct flow axis and so leaving the original track of the ancient meander behind. This underground action is also responsible for the creation of the numerous other cavities in the Gorges de l’Ardèche.
This geological phenomena is rare but not unique in France or in the world, although similar cases are not as important as the Pont d’Arc which is by far the most monumental: it crosses the river the Ardèche at a height of 54 meters and a width of 59 meters. Moreover it is the only stone arch in France crossing a still existing and streaming river.
